Perchance to dream: The Uptown Theatre
Chicago theatre people, you would do well to buy, rent, or borrow the 26 minute documentary “Uptown: Portrait of a Palace.” For all of us that pass by this shuttered gem and wonder how it looks inside, this is your chance. (You can even borrow it from the Chicago Public Library)
I also encourage you to get involved with Friends of the Uptown, a group dedicated to preserving and reopening this great beauty.
While marred by years of neglect, and facing millions of dollars of repair work, this 4,300 seat masterpiece of the Balaban and Katz Corp (who also built the Chicago Theatre) deserves to reopen. We try so hard to get the audience excited about what they are about to see. At the Uptown, the imagination is stirred simply by walking through the door into the lobby, and soars at the possibilities presented by the theatre itself.
Compare that to the stale spaces we build today.

Hudson & Gaines
THE LAST , AND PERHAPS ONLY TIME I WAS EVER INSIDE THIS PALACE WAS ABOUT 1972 , WHEN I WAS FOUR YEARS OLD TO SEE A LIVE STAGE SHOW OF THE CLASSIC WFLD-TV SHOW “CARTOON TOWN” (LATER “THE B.J. & DIRTY DRAGON SHOW”)I CAN RECALL VERY LITTLE AND NOW HAVE THE PLEASURE OF LIVING A FEW BLOCKS AWAY.I DREAM OF STICKING MY HEAD IN ENOUGH TO GET A GOOD LOOK BEFORE BEING YELLED AT ONE OF THE TIMES THE DOOR IS OPEN. AND IT SOMETIMES IS. THERE IS WORK GOING ON THERE,BUT AT A VERY “RELAXED” PACE. A TOUR WOULD BE AN ALL TIME JOY.BUT I KNOW THAT AT THE PERSENT TIME THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE. I JUST HOPE TO HEAR SOME POSITIVE UPDATES ON THE WORK BEING DONE SOON.
Roger: I do hope you are on our Uptown Adviser mailing list and have friended us on Facebook. Stay in touch!
